Rio de Janeiro is an incredible city and certainly is worth a visit at least once in a lifetime. However, there’s much more than Rio in Brazil, the biggest country in South America, with about 180 million citizens. It even has a few highly recommended naturist destinations. Two of the top locations are in the deep south of the Portuguese-speaking country: Colina do Sol (“Hill of the sun”) in the interior west of Porto Alegre, and Praia do Pinho (“Beach of the Pines”), on the island of Santa Catarina.
Colina do Sol is a true self-contained naturist community like few others, where about 70 families live permanently on 126 acres of forest atop a 600 foot mountain. Visitors have the option of staying in the hotel, a bed and breakfast (run by an American couple), a campground, or renting a house. The usual facilities that could be found in a large resort like Cypress Cove are to be found here as well, plus several shops run by residents, including grocery and hardware stores. The climate of this part of Brazil is similar to south Florida’s, but with the seasons reversed — thus summer happens when the northern hemisphere is in the throes of winter. Full nudity is obligatory, weather permitting, and singles are welcome at all times. For more information on Colina do Sol, visit their English website at http://www.colinadosol.com.br/English/.
Praia do Pinho (http://www.praiadopinho.com.br – in Portuguese only) is a naturist resort on the Atlantic island of Santa Catarina whose officially nudist beach is often nominated as one of the top of its kind on the planet. Accommodations include camping and 2 simple small hotels (“pousadas”) as well as a few cabins. Full nudity is required on the beach and single males and gay couples are not welcome, incredibly.
If traveling from outside South America, both Praia do Pinho and Colina do Sol will typically be reached via connecting flights from either Sao Paulo or Rio de Janeiro.
