With this installment, we launch a new series that takes a close look at major cities in the world from a nudist point of view. We’ll cover the main naturist beaches, parks and organizations that you’ll find if you travel to these exciting cities. What better place to start than Berlin, capital of Germany?
Germans are generally quite at ease with FKK (Freikörperkultur), as naturism is known in their country, and Berlin, their capital, offers possibilities to visiting nudists. Right dab in the center of town is the Tiergarten, an enormous public park, which has an area in the southwest, near the Victory monument (Siegesauele) set aside for nude sunbathing. Just west of Berlin on the shores of the Teufelsee, a small lake in the Grunewald forest, there is a popular nude beach (“strand” in German) surrounded by forests. Saunas in Berlin spas are all nude and generally mixed gender.
Berliners were also involved in nudism in the distant past as well. In 1932, authorities wanted to shut down a local “nudist school”. The rector replied that if any such attempt was made, 4,000 would happily march nude to prison. They were left alone. There were an estimated 200,000 nudists in Germany at the time.
