MADRID, SPAIN – This past Saturday (June 7, 2008), seven members of a group of nudist activists calling themselves Pronudista demonstrated in Plaza de Neptuno, a square in the center of Madrid. The nude protesters demanded the right to amble about naked in public places. Technically, public nudity isn’t a crime in this country, a fact made evident by the police, who had no choice but to let them distribute pamphlets to passersby. That said, it isn’t very often you see nude people in the streets of the Spanish capital, although on this same day the World Naked Bike Ride was on in town, with hundreds of naked participants. Perhaps this coincidence drew attention away from their protest.
