While Spain is arguably the most nudist-friendly nation in the world, its neighbor to the west, Portugal, has a lesser number of possibilities for those wishing to practice naturism. In order to find-out more about Portuguese naturism, Nudist Day got in touch with Laurindo Correia, president of the Portuguese Naturist Federation (FPN), which is affiliated with the INternational Naturist Federation (INF).
Correia estimates there are ten thousand nudists in Portugal. Portuguese law doesn’t make references to public nudity, but Correia stresses that it can be
deemed a sexual crime the if someone finds it offensive. The Portuguese public’s attitude towards nudism is generally one of acceptance, although prejudice still exists, he says.
According to Correia, there’s just five legal nude beaches in Portugal. Two are in the vicinity of Lisbon: Bela Vista, and Meco. Two others are located on the southern coast: Salto beach in Porto Covo, and Adegas beach in Odeceixe. Finally, there’s Barril beach on the island of Tavira in the Algarve region. In terms of nudist clubs, Correia tells us there are only 4, the biggest of which is in Lisbon. There’s also three nudist campsites, and 2 naturist guesthouses. There are no luxury nudist venues in Portugal, Correia told us, and no nude cruises, although it’s possible to privately charter boats for nude use. The best time of the year to practice naturism in Portugal is between May and September.
