MEXICO CITY – This morning at 6 am local time, Spencer Tunick began his biggest installation ever, photographing over 18 thousand nude Mexican volunteers in the Zocalo, Mexico City’s famous central square. Some estimates placed the figure at 20,000, but final numbers haven’t been tallied yet and will only be revealed Tuesday.
The number of participants exceeded by more than 11,000 the previous record set in Barcelona, Spain, and was even more surprising to Tunick himself, as his original estimate when he began the Mexican project had been around 4,000. The photo shoot lasted approximately two and a half hours in the cold morning air of the square, and one part of the installation was composed exclusively of female volunteers.
