The wave of neo-Christian conservatism sweeping the USA since 9-11 has liberal-minded Americans under siege. People who dare to express themselves in a non-conformist manner, nudists included, are being branded as subversives, quasi-terrorists, as never before. Many had thought the insanity would subside with the last presidential election, believing that George Bush would be kicked-out of Washington after a single term like his father before him. Alas, thanks to the evil deeds of a certain Osama in 2001, he was reelected and this was taken by the Christian right as a carte blanche to persecute and prosecute. Challenges to freedom were pushed in countless states. Just a sample: A bill to outlaw public nudity in Wisconsin; A similar proposal in Chico, California; Bills to outlaw nudist youth camps in Texas and Virginia; An anti-nudity bylaw in Wilmington, Vermont; An anti-nudity law passed for Daytona Beach…Etc. There were even municipalities making laws against naked statues! Most motions were defeated, but you can be sure that the self-righteous will be continuing their attempts to impose their brand of morality on every American. Why does it feel like 1950?
