Apartheid lives on…in the form of Nudists

SOUTH AFRICA - Incredibly, a group led by Beau Brummel, the “Nudist King” as he likes to refer to himself, is vying to open a nudist resort for whites only in Orania, South Africa. We recently received confirmation from Shana Coetzee, media representative for SANFED, the South African Naturist Federation, that this story is true.
SANFED issued a statement making it clear that it did not support Brummel (excerpt): “SANFED is an organisation that abides by the rules of the INF and the constitution of South Africa. And of course any naturist organisation or business entity that tries to suggest that it can exclude any social grouping or race group is itself going against some of the basic principles of naturism. Naturism, by virtue of the activity and the principles embodied in it, is about acceptance and tolerance…Hence, we would like state quite categorically that SANFED distances itself from any comments made by Mr. Brummel based on racial grounds. Mr. Brummel is neither part of, nor affiliated to SANFED in any way and as such only represents his own narrow personal opinions/business interests and not those of the greater South African naturist community.”
There’s little chance that such a club would ever get off the ground, but Brummel actions are sure to cause damage to the fragile relations between whites and blacks in South Africa, as well as tarnish the image of nudists in that country. The people of Orania are vehemently opposed to having a nudist club in their community. Outrageous when one is offended by nudity but not by racism, but then again Orania is a community of people who also try to keep segregation alive in this post-apartheid era.
