Nudists are normally a quiet bunch. We don’t like to draw attention on ourselves: We just want to be peacefully and happily naked! Some, however, can’t get enough publicity, even if it’s often negative press. One such denizen is Stephen Gough, also know as the “Naked Rambler”. He walked naked across England 2 years ago, sometimes getting jailed in the process, and now plans to repeat the feat starting June 16. Another similar story is that of Malcolm Scott, albeit he went across Canada in a motor home. At least they’re trying to advertise nudism! On a completely different plane, there’s groups, not necessarily nudist, who are using nakedness to promote their causes: Animal rights activists, Mexican farmers, scores of nude calendar fundraisers, Running of the nudes in Pamplona, Spain , a photographer/artist of thousands in city streets (Tunick), department stores and theme parks giving freebies to nude patrons, world bicycle protest rides…The list goes on. It used to be that the only blazingly public nudity was perpetrated by streakers, but now it’s everybody’s medium of expression! Nudists aren’t exhibitionists, but who will believe us now?!
