LOXAHATCHEE GARDENS, FLORIDA - Residents of Sunsport Gardens, a nudist community, were the most important voting block in tiny Loxahatchee Groves’ first municipal elections, according to Morley Schloss, whom we reached by phone at his home. Schloss owns Sunsport, which was also the site of the March 5 debate in the newly formed municipality in South Florida.
Schloss had invited all 10 council candidates to the debate, where approximately 30% of those in attendance were nude, including Schloss himself, acting as moderator. Nine of the hopefuls attended, but one, Toni Vorsteg, refused on the basis of her religious beliefs. Voters rejected Vorsteg at the polls March 13, and elected four of the others. It’s estimated just over 800 eligible voters cast ballots, a large number of which were from Sunsport, thus exerting the most influence on the outcome of the elections.
