Proposed Nude Beach Near Polluting Factory
For some time now, Argentina and neighboring Uruguay have been engaged in an intense political war over a paper paste plant on the shores of the river that forms the border between the two countries. Now, authorities in Fray Bentos, Uruguay, where the controversial plant is located, say they’re studying the possibility of opening a nude beach.
The proposed nudist beach would be primarily used by the many foreigners inhabiting the area, a number of which work for Botnia, the Finnish company that owns the plant. Many suspect that the move is also designed to demonstrate that the factory poses no health risks, countering claims from Argentinean groups that the plant’s effluent seriously pollutes the waters of the Uruguay river, which are shared by both nations.
Uruguay already has two official nude beaches, one near Punta del Este, and another in Rocha.
